Banksy

Banksy is a street artist who remains anonymous. Although his identity remains unknown, it is widely believed that he was born around 1974 in Bristol, England, around 1974. There are two artists who are most often suggested as being Banksy: Robert Banks and Robin Gunningham. Banksy graffiti and street art rose to prominence in the 1990’s with his early freehand work and then a predominance of stenciled pieces in the latter part of the decade. His work is a provocative and controversial. He has successfully cultivated a virtual subculture centered around his graffiti and other street art, using layered stencils, spray paint, street sign and other media sources.

Banksy directed, and was the subject of a British documentary film, “Exit Through the Gift Shop”. The amateur filmmaker featured several prominent street artists; Banksy, Debora Guetta, Space Invader, Mr. Brainwash, Monsieur Andre, Zeus, Shepard Fairey, Ron English, Caledonia Curry and many others. The documentary examines the relationship between commercial and street art.

Although Banksy’s identity remains unknown, his artwork has disrupted many conventions in the world of art and has become increasingly valuable and sought after by celebrities and art collectors worldwide.
